Coldplay and La Roux at the Exeter Castle |
| |
Exeter Castle, 19th December 2009
|
Coldplay and La Roux played an extremely special show at Exeter Castle on Saturday, 19th December, as part of Mencap's new Big Noise Session. The show marked a homecoming for Chris, who was born and bred in Exeter.
The stunning Exeter Castle served as a backdrop for this unique event, which was staged inside a marquee transformed into a Christmas winter wonderland. It was in this festive, intimate setting that La Roux and Coldplay performed unique, stripped-back sets. Lily Allen was to also play, but could could not attend due to illness.
Says Chris Martin:
"I don't think there could be a better way to end the decade... La Roux, Lily Allen, Jo Whiley - what more can you ask for? We're proud to support Mencap and, for me, it's exciting to play my hometown. We haven't played there since 2000. It's going to be really, really special."
Says Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley (who is behind the Little Noise Sessions):
"This gig has all the right ingredients... a beautiful location, Christmas spirit, one of the best bands in the world and special friends all in an intimate setting. Add mulled wine, mistletoe, candles and carols and this will be the ultimate winter warmer. I couldn't be more thrilled that Coldplay, Lily and La Roux want to make a big festive Noise for Mencap."

Rolling Horse Revue |
| |
Exeter Castle, 20th - 31st July 2009
Gallery open from 11am-5pm, free admission, parking available, closed Sunday. |
Six very different artists interpret the subject of the horse through a variety of media: Xanthe Mosley in extraordinary, precise anatomical drawings, which contrast sharply to the large expressive paintings by Pandora Mond, which capture so well the movement of this beautiful animal as do Charlotte Durie's colourful monotypes. Jo Derczynska's work, spontaneous and touching in it's directness, reveals her intimate relationship with her own horse and her passion for hunting and racing. These paintings contribute a welcome addition of vibrant colour in an otherwise largely monochromatic show. The bronze sculptures by Jess Wallace and Clare Trenchard and their larger works are powerful and thought provoking - a new take on a subject as old as man.

Saul Cathcart |
| |
Exeter Castle 23rd & 25th - 28th May 2009
Gallery open from 10am-6pm,
free admission, parking available. |
North Cornwall’s coast line fascinates Saul Cathcart, 'I feel like I’m looking right down the county’s fringe, its rugged skin'. For him, it’s a place where everything happens and the elements play.
He strives for a balance between representational line and instinctual marks, allowing the piece to change and evolve freely. The paintings are as much about how he is feeling as what his eyes are seeing. All of his work is created in situ; He paints on board, canvas and watercolour paper, retaining the looseness and freshness of a quick sketch. The power and energy created by the coast and the weather is special.

Exeter Festival of Food and Drink 2009 & Beer festival |
| |
Exeter Castle, 17-19th April 2009
|
The Castle was proud to welcome the Exeter Fesival of Food and Drink again this year
The Exeter Festival of Food and Drink, now in its 6th year, has grown into one of the largest events of its kind in the UK.
The Festival's Food pavilions will be a fine demonstration of the richness, the power, and the importance of the local region, where land and sea yield a true bounty of glorious produce. We aim to encourage producers to work in sustainable ways that don’t harm our land.
This year’s Festival saw an expanded Cookery Theatre where many of the region’s high profile chefs could be watched in action, as well as some young and rising stars.
Following last year’s launch of an initiative to twin Devon with Tuscany, a group of Tuscan producers from Valdera, near Pisa, will attend the Slow Food Devon Pavilion. After the success of last year, the Festival carried on into the evening, with our 'After
Dark' festivities that took place on both Friday and Saturday evenings. Throughout the weekend, the Exeter Castle Courtyard was home to a selection of producers offering fresh hog roast baps, real cider, local ales, fresh pies, and paella. With the castle as a backdrop, the huge celebrity cookery theatrel featured celebrity chefs demonstrating the best in regional and seasonal cooking, and included Lesley Waters, Michael Caines, James Tanner, James Nathan and many more.
The brewers of the South West England Beer Festival were back once more. In the Castle Courtyard outside the Cookery Theatre, there were plenty of lively stalls to tempt your taste buds. Live music from local bands and delicious regional food, real ales and cider made these the City’s most unique nights of the year. There was hog roast from Kenniford Farm and Pieminster serving up pie and mash.
Experience a night of fabulous food, entertainment and music in the atmospheric Exeter Castle courtyard. The Exeter Food and Drink Festival was held in the Exeter Castle and Northernhay Gardens from the 17-19th April 2009.
Information about the Exeter Festival of Food and Drink 2009 is available on the Exeter food and drink Festival website: www.exeterfoodanddrinkfestival.co.uk

Call of the Lost |
| |
Exeter Castle 1st - 31st March
Open daily 11am-6pm,
free admission. |
Clare Flint’s oil paintings are on a large scale and this exhibition in the new ‘Long Gallery’ continues an investigation of themes of heaven and hell today and the interaction between people and falling space.
Simon Ruscoe’s fifteen foot high sculpture of a mother and baby provides a preview to the series of seven huge drowning figures. The steel figures represent a direct response to the major fears, frustrations and struggles faced by humanity in contemporary times.
These two exceptionally talented figurative artists come together in this exhibition ‘Call of the Lost’ both having studios in the new Exeter Artspace which recently moved to Exeter Castle, this venue being complementary to both their artwork. This exciting exhibition was in collaboration with Exeter Artspace, Vibraphonics and Exeter Arts Council and is the inaugural exhibition in Exeter Castle.
